Emergency department received top score again for patient-centred care

St John of God Murdoch Hospital’s patients have voted its Emergency Department as the top private emergency department in Australia for the third year running.

In 2013, 2014 and now in 2015, the department is ranked the best compared with other private departments of a similar size by global health organisation surveyors, Press Ganey.

Director of Emergency Medicine Dr Paul Bailey says patients gave top marks for the compassionate care given by doctors and nurses.

“Our patients love that we care about them as individuals; that they are not just another number to us,” says Dr Bailey.

“We realize that when people come to an emergency department, they are often frightened and vulnerable so we want to relieve their anxiety any way we can.”

“Our team works hard to reduce waiting times and deliver excellent care, whilst also ensuring patients are informed of what’s happening with their care along the way.”

The department has a strong focus on staff education and quality improvement and is involved in numerous research projects.

Chief Executive Officer John Fogarty says he is extremely proud of the result, especially since such positive feedback has improved in many areas on the excellent 2014 and 2013 results.

“We are delighted with these results as it reflects our patients’ continued happiness with our service,” Mr Fogarty said.

“It demonstrates an embedded culture of providing relevant, patient-centred care for our community; care that truly reflects St John of God Health Care’s Values of hospitality, compassion, excellence, respect and justice.”
