Professor Peter Thompson wins research award

Congratulations to Cardiologist, Professor Peter Thompson on winning the prestigious Marshall and
Warren Award for excellence in research.

Peter Thompson nominated Dr Mark Nidorf to receive the award because of his pivotal role in this
research study being undertaken at HeartCare Western Australia. The award was presented by
the Minister for Health Susan Lay at an awards ceremony in Canberra on September 22, 2015.

The Marshall and Warren Award recognises the best highly innovative and potentially
transformative grant from among all the applications nominated for this award in each year’s
Project Grants funding round by each Grant Review Panel assessing Project Grant Applications.

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Research Committee selects the
award from these nominations.

Through this grant, the members of HeartCare WA will follow up on the promising results of their
earlier clinical trial that suggested that low dose colchicine can reduce incidents of heart attacks
and unstable angina in patients with stable coronary heart disease.

The award is named after Nobel Laureates Professors Barry Marshall and Robin Warren, who were
awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for their discovery of the bacterium
Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. It is therefore a very
prestigious award as it recognizes the most innovative grant application from the many thousands
submitted to the NHMRC from all Universities and Medical Research Institutes and Hospitals in
Australia each year.
