St John of God Murdoch Hospital awarded Clinical Nurse Gerry Muir with the coveted Caregiver of the Year Award for the outstanding care he provides for patients and their families in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Each month, staff and patients nominate a staff member from any area of the hospital who excels in their work. At the end of each year, one of the 12 Caregivers of the Month is selected as Caregiver of the Year.

Mr Muir, a Seville Grove resident, was last December’s Caregiver of the Month.

A family member of a patient who was in the ICU nominated Mr Muir for the special care he took of her dying sister.

“All the staff during my sister’s stay were excellent, but Gerry was the one who was with us at the end,” said the patient’s sister.

“Gerry made our difficult situation easier to cope with…I don’t think my family could have sat through those 12 hours knowing what the eventual outcome would be without him.”

Mr Muir has worked at St John of God Murdoch Hospital since 2005, when he immigrated to Australia from Scotland. He often features positively in patients’ feedback, receiving thank you cards regularly and being asked for guidance from other staff members.

He was, however, very surprised to receive the award and says it’s all just a part of the job.

“I enjoy being able to concentrate all my efforts on individual patients in the ICU,” Mr Muir says.

“I try to get an understanding of our patients and their families; what their needs are and how I can help them on what might be the worst day of their lives.”

Gerry has four children, coaches the Armadale soccer under nines and volunteers as a First Aid Coordinator for the Hills BMX Club in his spare time. He is now also sharing his expertise with newer members of staff as an educator in the ICU.
