Registered Nurse and Recruitment Project Officer Melissa Coventry has been awarded St John of God Murdoch Hospital’s Caregiver of Year for 2013.

Melissa was selected for her outstanding patient care from a group of 12 caregivers who were each awarded Caregiver of the Month throughout the year.

Melissa was nominated for the award by a patient who said nothing was ever too much trouble for Melissa and that she handled some very challenging situations with ease and grace, demonstrating skills and knowledge far beyond her years of experience.

“With a strong belief that emotional and psychological statuses impact a patient’s physical health, I feel it is through her extra effort and compassion that I made the progress that I did,” said the patient.

The award is another string to Melissa’s bow after being nominated for the HESTA Outstanding Graduate Award last year, recently having the opportunity to act as Case Management Coordinator and becoming the recruitment liaison for the hospital.

“I am truly honoured to receive this award out of so many worthy recipients,” said Melissa.

“I always knew I was going to be a nurse and it is a great pleasure, not only to be able to be able to do it well, but to be recognised for your work.”

Hospital Director of Nursing Adam Coleman said Melissa is an outstanding nurse who makes a huge individual contribution to nursing at the hospital.

“Melissa sets a very high standard and is an excellent role model for junior staff,” said Mr Coleman.

“With such a strong work ethic and positive nature, she faces a great future in nursing.”

Melissa’s caring nature runs in her family – her mother is a volunteer at St John’s Ambulance and her grandmother was a theatre nurse and midwife who delivered her grandchildren, Melissa included.

After completing her studies at Curtin University in 2011, Melissa chose St John of God Murdoch Hospital to start her nursing career. She completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Palliative Care at Edith Cowan University at the end of last year.

Melissa is currently working both as a nurse and a Recruitment Project Officer at the hospital and is looking forward to whatever the future holds.

“The hospital redevelopment is creating many opportunities for nurses and who knows what’s around the corner,” said Ms Coventry. “These are exciting times.”
