Emergency department scores top ranking

20th anniversary pics 007St John of God Murdoch Hospital Emergency Department has been voted by its patients as the top private emergency department in Australia.

The department was ranked the best compared with other private departments of its size, and in the top ten per cent of all public and private emergency departments in the country, by global health organisation surveyors, Press Ganey.

Nurse Manager Gail Chambers said the department has worked extremely hard to achieve this result by improving the service in a number of areas.

“Our department places a real emphasis on communicating with patients and their families.”

“We are very focused on being compassionate, friendly and kind; these qualities in our nurses and doctors make an enormous difference when you are unwell and vulnerable.”

The Department has recently had a number of successes; Dr Julie Dockerty became a Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, Academic Officer Freya Shearer received a Rhodes scholarship and Registered Nurse April Kruining was asked to become an instructor of an Advanced Life Support course.

Director of Emergency Medicine Dr Paul Bailey said the Press Ganey Survey is a very useful tool with which to measure patient satisfaction.

“It’s an excellent way to understand and improve the entire patient experience,” said Dr Bailey.

“We are very proud of our Emergency Department and our caregivers’ commitment to continue to build on their knowledge and skills.”

“We also look forward to being able to provide this excellent service to the community into the future.”
