For Lady Brand Village Mandurah resident, Betty Jenkins, St John of God Health Choices provided her with excellent care in the comfort of her own home after a long stay in hospital.

After five weeks at St John of God Murdoch Hospital having surgery for cancer and receiving treatment, Mrs Jenkins was keen to go home and be in her own surroundings.

A Discharge Planner from the hospital arranged for her to go home under the care of her granddaughter Amanda Blackwell and Health Choices, the Home and Community Care division of St John of God Healthcare.

As a mother of four with a newborn, Ms Blackwell was reluctant with this proposal but happy to trial the process.

“I had no idea what to expect, what to do, or how this was all going to fit into our daily lives,” said Ms Blackwell.

The Health Choices nurses visited Mrs Jenkins daily and cared for her wound until it healed and after the first few visits we were delighted with the care and how it eased the transition home.

“We were chuffed right from the start,” said Ms Blackwell. “The nurses were always so positive and helpful – they were never intrusive and always respected Grandma’s privacy.”

Mrs Jenkins said the nurses were always professional and friendly, always arriving with smiles on their faces.

“It meant the world to us as it was quite a stressful time,” she said. “They made such a positive impact on our lives and we are very grateful to all the Health Choices team.”
